Managing Work-Life Balance

November 9, 2022 by Faith Perez M.A., LPC

We often hear the term, work-life balance, when applying for jobs, attending Human Resource meetings or on company websites. So, what does that term actually mean? According to Business News Daily, it “is the state of equilibrium where a person equally prioritizes the demand of one’s career and the demands of one’s personal life”. For the next few minutes, we will break down the difference between a poor work-life balance and that of a positive one. Keep track so you can see how yours measures up.

Poor Work-Life Balance

  • Long work hours
    • Staying often to complete tasks or working longer shifts to fill a void in personnel
  • Increased responsibilities at work
    • Taking on other tasks but struggling to find time to complete or taking work home
  • Increased responsibilities at home
    • Taking care of children or family (with/without illness)
  • An increase in expenses without an increase in salary
    • Most in today’s economy might agree with this as a factor
  • Difficulty relaxing at night or disturbances in sleep
    • Finding yourself ruminating about tasks to complete
  • Giving up on self-care
    • You might stop exercising, enjoying time with friends, etc.
  • Feeling lost in your sense of purpose
    • Not having clear boundaries can lead to uncertainty of your personal roles
  • Unfinished projects or engage in hobbies
    • Unable to finish projects for home or office due to stress of time management
  • Never saying “No”
    • Feeling shame/fear if you say “No” to a task you know you do not have time for

Positive Work-Life Balance

  • You prioritize your health
    • Taking time to see doctors when needed or taking time off
  • Don’t be afraid to “unplug”
    • Take a few hours each night to unplug and practice mindfulness of your needs
  • Use your vacation time
    • It is given for your use, TAKE IT!
  • Set boundaries
    • Avoid burnout by separating your work and home life as much as possible
  • Set obtainable goals
    • Setting goals helps to define timelines for tasks and reduces stress through productivity

It is important to remember there is not going to be a one size fits all to the “Perfect” Work-Life Balance, only taking the initiative in how yours affects you. Take a look at the areas of your work versus personal life balance and assess whether or not it could use a tune up. It begins by implementing techniques to reduce your stress, setting firm boundaries and sticking to them. When you find yourself bringing work home daily, checking emails late at night, or giving priority to a work task over family time-it is time to reassess your boundaries.

So how does yours measure up?

If you are struggling with setting and maintaining boundaries, it may help to talk with a professional to see how you can strengthen them and institute a positive balance in your life.

Ray has been an extremely effective therapist utilizing a multitude of different techniques, including talk therapy and EMDR. He is very intuitive, kind, and sensitive to his patient's needs. Cannot recommend him enough.

I love this place. Office is super helpful for scheduling and payments. I do all my appointments online. My counselor Raymund Begaye is always professional and helpful, and offers different therapies including talk therapy and EMDR. Counseling with Ray has improved my quality of life and ability to handle, and enjoy (!), my life.

I have dealt with 2 therapists in the past, and I can tell you from experience that Raymund Begaye is world class. He has all the wisdom, grace and savvy of Hannibal Lector without the cannibalistic tendencies. Always selfless, supportive, and non judgemental, meeting Raymund has been a huge blessing in my life. I know from the bottom of my heart that he got into this business because he cares about people and the human element. He also thinks outside of the box. His knowledge and ability to conduct EMDR sessions have been pure gold. I was skeptical at first about EMDR, but after several sessions with Raymund I can honestly say past traumatic experiences that have kept me in a state of bondage, are not as intense as they once were. Raymund is a true American hero in many ways. He saved many lives fighting for our great country, and he continues to save lives by providing hope to the hopeless.

I've been seeing Ray for over 3 years now. He has helped me work through so much of my trauma. We started with talk therapy and it was a big help. As we opened up through my past traumas, we utilized the EMDR therapy, and let me tell you, it works wonders. I'm not sure of the exact science behind why EMDR works but I promise it does. I've come along way from the start of my therapy journey. Ray is very patient, understanding, and even when you think he doesn't get it, he does. He's always been very reassuring and has let me ease into dealing with my past. I think I found my therapist for life because before him, I had gone through several therapists that never made me feel like I'm being heard. I would recommend the EMDR therapy to anyone. Thanks InMindOut for employing such a wonderful therapist. Please don't let him go anywhere lol.

My therapist has been Ray B since fall of 2021. I was diagnosed with PTSD after the death of my husband. We were together 24 years and have a son. I know I'm alive today thanks to God and Ray. His techniques, patience, experience, care, effort, ideas and many more I can't think of, have been amazing. Ray is a blessing in my life.
