Twirling Class (or lessons my clients taught me)

October 31, 2019 by Diana Loesch

What an incredible privilege to be a part of the journey from darkness and despair, hopelessness and inadequacy, to light and optimism, hopefulness and joy.   And I recently had a session with a client who shared some profound wisdom gained during her struggle against depression and anxiety.  She also recommended I name my practice “Twirling Class”.  Pretty humbling.

You have to change if you want to be better.  Rinse.  Repeat.  Change is hard; treading water is harder.

Life is a rollercoaster, stand in line for life.  In my observation, a turning point for this client was the recognition that her distress didn’t make her defective or inadequate, it was often a normal reaction to an abnormal situation.  Having feelings is a gift, not a curse, making peace with them is the key.

Ride or die for myself.  Recognition of your value and importance is a foundation to overcoming mental health issues.

I just want to make you happy; funny thing is, I don’t need you to, I was happy when you got here.  Wow.  Your value doesn’t lie in the esteem of others.  You are worthy of your attention, kindness, and respect.  Happiness is an internal state not dependent on external factors.

My job is to paint a picture of possibility. For me, twirling is a metaphor for joy.  As a therapist, I bring education, experience, and technique to the table, but maybe the most important thing I can do is help you believe in the light, see the light, and feel the light in your heart.

Tips for Maximizing Your Therapy Experience

October 1, 2019 by Diana Loesch

Therapy is an investment – get the most out of it by planning in advance for your sessions and noting what comes up for you during the week, implementing new skills, an monitoring what works and what doesn’t.  Similarly, journaling key discoveries, new coping skills, or fresh perspectives can support continued growth with things are difficult

Tips for maximizing your experience:

  1.  Take notes.  Anecdotally, I have found that clients who take or bring notes seem to get the most out of their sessions and are more likely to tell me they feel as though they are making progress.
  2. Utilize me to practice new skills-if speaking up is typically uncomfortable for you, disagree with me, call me out, appropriate responses guaranteed.  If saying no is difficult, tell me NOJ  (boundaries are important!)
  3. Step out of your comfort zone.  Change is scary, but it can also yield big returns in growth.  My office is a safe place to stretch.
  4. Be honest, your therapists office is the no judgment zone!  I know this is a scary one, but therapy is about getting better, feeling better.  How can we get there if we don’t communicate about the obstacles?
  5. Give yourself credit.  Every victory, no matter how small it may seem, contributes to forward movement toward your goals.
  6. And always remember:  YOU ARE WORTH IT!
