Blue Zones

January 16, 2024 by Jana Wesson-Martin

What’s the Buzz?

Imagine places where people don’t just live longer; they thrive for decades, dancing through life well into their hundreds. These places exist, and I am fascinated by this phenomenon. These places are like the Fountain of Youth, but real places where people live on into their 100s. The pursuit of longevity is as joyful as it is enlivening.

Blue Zones is a term coined by Dave Buettner. He and many other scientists continue to study these regions across the world that are longevity zones. There are hidden gems around the globe, where people seem to have unlocked the secrets to a longer, healthier life.

The Fantastic Five of the Elite Club

It might be worth our while to pay attention. There’s no elite club quite like the Blue Zones. These mystical regions dotted across the globe have a unique secret – they’re home to some of the longest-living people on Earth.

Okinawa, Japan: This Japanese island is like a paradise for ageless wonders. Residents here regularly outlive the rest of us and do so with style. There are five times more centenarians (people who live 100 years or longer) than there are in Western countries. What researchers say is that the difference in lifespan is not due to genetics, but rather to lifestyle. Home to the world’s longest-lived women, Okinawa boasts a culture that emphasizes fresh, local produce and an active lifestyle.

Sardinia, Italy: On this picturesque Italian island in the Mediterranean, it’s not just the landscapes that take your breath away. Sardinians have mastered the art of living well into their hundreds.,

Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica: With its pristine beaches and lush jungles, this tropical wonderland is a place where time seems to stand still. This tropical paradise isn’t just about swaying palm trees; it’s a haven for people who seem to have discovered the fountain of youth in their own backyard.

Ikaria, Greece: Known as the “Island Where People Forget to Die,” Ikaria is a vibrant Greek island where time appears to slow down, and life is cherished. Ikaria’s serene landscapes and traditional Mediterranean diet offer valuable insights into the art of living well.

Loma Linda, California: Surrounded by the bustling energy of California, Loma Linda is an oasis of longevity, thanks to its close-knit community and health-conscious residents. Amid bustling America, Loma Linda stands out as a haven, due to the strong sense of community among its Seventh-day Adventist residents.

The Blue Zones Book of Secrets

What’s the big secret in Blue Zones? It’s not about magic potions or superhuman genes. It’s about everyday choices that add up to extraordinary lives:

Plant-Powered Plates: Blue Zone people feast on colorful, plant-based diets that are as tasty as they are nutritious. It’s like a daily celebration of flavors.

Active Adventures: Physical activity isn’t a chore; it’s a way of life. Think dancing, gardening, and walking everywhere – even just to visit a neighbor.

Laughter and Love: Strong social bonds and tight-knit communities are the heartbeat of Blue Zones. It’s all about cherishing friends and family, as if every day is a celebration.

Stress? What is Stress? Stress reduction isn’t just a trend; it’s a daily practice of Meditation, naps, and leisurely activities that are critical tools for a peaceful mind.

Bringing Blue Zones to Your Own Life

  • Eat the Rainbow: Add more veggies and fruits to your plate. Try a new, exotic fruit or veggie each week and make it a tasty experiment.
  • Mediterranean Meals: Try cooking a Mediterranean-inspired dinner with olive oil, fresh vegetables, and a glass of red wine (in moderation, of course).
  • Dance Like Nobody’s Watching: Put on your favorite tunes and dance around your living room. Who cares if you’re not a pro? It’s all about letting go. Embrace the Okinawan love for dance. Whether it’s a local dance class, salsa lessons, or even a spirited game of dance-based video games, groove your way to better health.
  • Neighborhood Connection: Get to know a neighbor. Organize a neighborhood picnic, game night, or potluck. You’ll be amazed at how sharing good food and laughter can create bonds that last a lifetime.
  • Daily Meditation: Take a few minutes each day to breathe deeply and relax. Whether it’s through meditation, yoga, or just sitting in silence, your mind will thank you.
  • Gardening Galore: Start a small garden, even if it’s just a few potted herbs on your windowsill. Gardening can be therapeutic and a wonderful way to connect with nature.
  • Social Hours: Create a regular social gathering with friends or neighbors. It could be a book club, a movie night, or simply sharing a meal together.
  • Ikarian Siestas: Embrace the art of rest. Take short breaks during the day to relax and recharge, just like the Ikarians do with their siestas.

The Blue Zones study reminds me of the need for simplicity and tranquility in our lives. I want to be less consumeristic. Sometimes our things seem to own us.

Could it be that learning from the Blue Zones is a Passport to a Lifetime of Joy?

The Blue Zone study calls for a harmonious blend of lifestyle, diet, and community. Imagine indulging in vibrant local produce, sharing meals with friends and family, and embracing daily physical activity, like dancing or gardening. Turns out these practices aren’t just adding years to your life, but, in particular, life to your years.

The Fun Factor: Adopting Blue Zone Habits

Now, here’s the exciting part – you can incorporate Blue Zone habits into your life without relocating. It’s like adding a dash of adventure to your everyday routine! The Blue Zone Adventure awaits us. It is an invitation to a happier, healthier, and longer life – one filled with fun, flavor, and fulfillment.

I love this place. Office is super helpful for scheduling and payments. I do all my appointments online. My counselor Raymund Begaye is always professional and helpful, and offers different therapies including talk therapy and EMDR. Counseling with Ray has improved my quality of life and ability to handle, and enjoy (!), my life.

I have dealt with 2 therapists in the past, and I can tell you from experience that Raymund Begaye is world class. He has all the wisdom, grace and savvy of Hannibal Lector without the cannibalistic tendencies. Always selfless, supportive, and non judgemental, meeting Raymund has been a huge blessing in my life. I know from the bottom of my heart that he got into this business because he cares about people and the human element. He also thinks outside of the box. His knowledge and ability to conduct EMDR sessions have been pure gold. I was skeptical at first about EMDR, but after several sessions with Raymund I can honestly say past traumatic experiences that have kept me in a state of bondage, are not as intense as they once were. Raymund is a true American hero in many ways. He saved many lives fighting for our great country, and he continues to save lives by providing hope to the hopeless.

I've been seeing Ray for over 3 years now. He has helped me work through so much of my trauma. We started with talk therapy and it was a big help. As we opened up through my past traumas, we utilized the EMDR therapy, and let me tell you, it works wonders. I'm not sure of the exact science behind why EMDR works but I promise it does. I've come along way from the start of my therapy journey. Ray is very patient, understanding, and even when you think he doesn't get it, he does. He's always been very reassuring and has let me ease into dealing with my past. I think I found my therapist for life because before him, I had gone through several therapists that never made me feel like I'm being heard. I would recommend the EMDR therapy to anyone. Thanks InMindOut for employing such a wonderful therapist. Please don't let him go anywhere lol.

My therapist has been Ray B since fall of 2021. I was diagnosed with PTSD after the death of my husband. We were together 24 years and have a son. I know I'm alive today thanks to God and Ray. His techniques, patience, experience, care, effort, ideas and many more I can't think of, have been amazing. Ray is a blessing in my life.
